Specific Grades and Their Uses

Standard Strength Grades

Grade A: Offers good weldability and toughness. This is a basic structural grade used in shipbuilding.
Grade B: Provides higher strength than Grade A, making it suitable for more demanding structural components in shipbuilding.
Grade D: Designed for colder environments, it provides increased toughness compared to Grades A and B.
Grade E: A higher toughness grade for extreme conditions and highly stressed components.

High-Strength Grades

AH32, AH36, AH40: These are high-strength structural steels used for tougher marine applications.
AH32: High-strength steel for marine applications.
AH36: Higher strength for more demanding environments.
AH40: The strongest of the AH series, used in even more demanding environments.
DH32, DH36, DH40: These grades offer high strength combined with superior toughness.
DH32: High-strength steel with additional toughness.
DH36: Frequently used in shipbuilding for structural components.
DH40: Offers the highest toughness and strength for critical components.

Extra-High Strength Grades

EH32, EH36, EH40: These grades provide extra-high strength for critical shipbuilding applications, especially in harsh environments.
EH32: Extra-high strength steel used for rigorous applications.
EH36: Combines strength and toughness for harsh marine environments.
EH40: Offers the highest level of strength and toughness for extreme conditions.
FH32, FH36, FH40: These are top-grade steels offering the highest level of strength and toughness.
FH32: High-strength and exceptional toughness for severe conditions.
FH36: Used in high-stress areas requiring maximum durability.
FH40: The highest strength within this category, used for the most critical marine applications.

Key Properties

Weldability: All ASTM A131 grades offer good weldability, making them suitable for shipbuilding and marine applications where welding is a crucial process.
Toughness: Grades D, E, and the high-strength categories (AH, DH, EH, FH) are designed with increased toughness for use in colder environments or applications with high levels of stress and impact.
Corrosion Resistance: These plates offer reasonable resistance to atmospheric corrosion, which can be improved by applying protective coatings.
