ASTM A285 is a specification for pressure vessel steel plates intended for low and intermediate tensile strength applications. These plates are designed to be used in fabricating pressure vessels and boilers that operate at moderate temperatures and pressures. ASTM A285 steel plates come in three grades: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, with each grade providing a different level of tensile strength and toughness.

Grade A is the least strong of the three, offering moderate tensile strength and is typically used for applications that do not require high strength but still demand good weldability and formability.
Grade B offers a mid-level tensile strength and is widely used in the construction of pressure vessels where higher strength than Grade A is needed, but not as high as Grade C.
Grade C is the strongest of the three, providing enhanced mechanical properties, making it suitable for more demanding pressure vessel applications where increased strength and durability are required.

ASTM A285 plates are commonly used in industries like oil, gas, and chemical processing, as well as for boilers and storage tanks, where safety and reliability under pressure are essential. These plates are known for their good weldability and are often employed in environments where operating temperatures and pressures are moderate.

Grade Category Description
A285 Grade A Pressure Vessel Plate Low tensile strength, suitable for low to intermediate pressure vessels and boilers. Offers good weldability and formability.
A285 Grade B Pressure Vessel Plate Medium tensile strength, commonly used in pressure vessels requiring moderate strength. Provides balanced weldability and toughness.
A285 Grade C Pressure Vessel Plate Highest tensile strength among the three grades, ideal for more demanding pressure vessel applications with higher pressure and temperature. Excellent durability and weldability.
